1) Engineering for Social Justice Scholars Program

The Engineering for Social Justice Scholars Program is a leadership initiative that includes a 2-semester service-learning course experience. Students apply engineering skills in STEM education outreach activities with underrepresented youth in Champaign (T or R 4:30-5:30) and create meaningful social action projects to support engineering for social justice. The courses include exploration of a range of topics related to social justice and engineering, including structural oppression and inequalities in schooling, the impact of racial and ethnic disparities in STEM education, human-centered design and appropriate technology, sustainable community development, and history, culture, and politics in engineering. The ESJ Scholars Program is a 2-semester commitment. Courses count toward College of Engineering Liberal Education Electives & Technical Electives for the ILEE Degree.

2) STEM Education Practicum

ENG 298: Special Topics Section SEP (2 credits; CRN: 69674). Meets R 3:30-4:50 p.m.

In this service-learning course, students engage with diverse middle school students from Chicago Public Schools as part of the ICANEXSEL (Illinois-ChiS&E Alliance for Nurturing Excellence in STEM Education and Leadership) program. The outreach program includes hands-on activities, experiments, and engaging math and science lessons and will be held at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. Students must be available to facilitate several (4-5) Saturday sessions under the mentorship of Chicago teachers (transportation to/from Chicago will be provided). The course includes discussion of topics related to STEM education, curriculum review, and reflection on the fieldwork experiences.

3) Design Thinking for Social Innovation in South Africa

ENG 398: Special Topics Section DTS (3 credits; CRN: 69673). Meets T R 12:30-1:50 p.m. [2nd 8-week course plus Winter Study Tour in Cape Town]

This 2nd 8-week service-learning course explores topics related to social innovation and sustainable development in contemporary South Africa. Through case studies, discussion, and interactive activities, students will develop skills in the application of design thinking for social innovation and gain a deeper understanding of the role of engineering in social innovation. Students will work with community partners in Cape Town, South Africa to conceptualize and develop projects that can address genuine social, economic, environmental and/or technical problems of interest to community stakeholders.

The course includes a faculty-led trip to Cape Town during winter intersession (tentative dates: 12/26/17-1/14/18), in which students engage in short-term service-learning internships with nonprofit partners in work related to conservation, environmental sustainability, and community development. Students can expect to enhance their communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and intercultural skills while learning with and from community partners. Educational and cultural excursions will be included as well as opportunities to learn more about the work of social innovators in Khayelitsha Township. Travel costs paid separately. Students may be eligible for IPENG Travel Fellowships (Nov. 1deadline) and I4I Study Abroad Scholarships (Sept. 15 deadline).

Dow AgroSciences Summer Intern Program

Dow AgroSciences is inviting students to apply to their R&D Summer Intern Program. Internships are available in chemistry, biology, and computer science related disciplines, including, but not limited to, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, plant breeding, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, surface chemistry, engineering (chemical, biological, material, or optical) and informatics (bio and chem). The laboratory-based Research and Development internships are located at Dow's global headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is a paid internship; salaries are determined by the student’s year in school.  Subsidized housing is available for qualified students.  Eligible students must be pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree from a U.S. based college or university with proper U.S. work authorization, or the ability to obtain work authorization through their university.

Kenis Research Group looking for undergrads

The Kenis group is looking for 3-4 dedicated undergraduate students to help conduct research on the electrochemical reduction of CO₂ to value added chemicals and fuels. As you probably are aware, the CO₂ concentrations in the air continue to rise and are at much higher levels now than pre-industrial revolution era. The rise in CO₂ levels have been linked to increasing global temperatures and the associated effects of climate change, more erratic weather patterns, etc. The Kenis group is pursuing a promising approach to help reduce CO₂ emissions: the electrochemical conversion of CO₂ to building blocks that can be used for the synthesis of polymers, fuels and other chemicals.

As an undergraduate researcher you will have the opportunity to work in:

• Electrocatalysis
• Computational fluid dynamics (COMSOL, Fluent)
• Reactor design
• Technoeconomic analysis and process simulation (Aspen)

Typical research hours would be at least 10 hours per week. Rising Seniors! Co-op Opportunity at Docker.

Docker, the world's leading software container platform, is searching for rising seniors to take part in their 2017 co-op opportunity. 

Docker's Engineering/Product Development team will be hiring 5 students this fall. Qualified students will "help [Docker] scale, add more applications and then make those applications secure as that happens. There will also be verification work for ensuring the apps are bug free and secure. Most of this is applicable to backend development, but there are opportunities to learn full stack overall."

The co-op program is 4-months long and will be based in Docker's headquarters in San Francisco. The start date is September 2017 and the program will wrap up in December. The program is searching for rising seniors. Please follow this link for more details.

3rd Annual Clorox Product Design Competition & Tech Talk

Clorox will be on campus April 4 & April 5 to host our 3rd annual Product Design Competition & Tech Talk! Please see the attached document for more information. This year, teams of 1-4 members will be tasked to come up with a new product innovation that solves a common consumer frustration, and then present recommendations to a panel of judges. There is no need to prepare in advance! Just bring yourself or a team representing your society and put your skills to the test. Participants will have the chance to win great prizes and gain exposure with a top consumer products company. The design competition will take place during 1 hour time slots on April 4. The competition will be in rooms TB 114 and TB 101 (Transportation Building). After the competition, please join us for our collaborative tech talk at 7 PM, April 5 in Noyes 161. Students and Clorox R&D employees will work together to walk through the phases of product development. Winners from the design competition will be announced at this time as well! Capital One Research Park Tech Intern (Spring and/or Summer 2017)

Capital One’s Illinois Digital Campus Lab at the University of Illinois Research Park is looking for Tech interns to join its intern program during the Spring academic semester and/or Summer Session.   Interns working during the academic year are expected to log 10-20 hours per week in the lab during normal business hours.  Summer interns work full-time, 40-hours per week, on-site.  The iDCL is one of 8 research and development centers at the bank.  What makes the iDCL unique is its standing as the first and only “lab” located on a university campus.  We like to consider ourselves as the “tip of the spear” focusing on a project model of Research + Proof of Concept.   Focusing on a project model rather than a specific functional area inside our technology business affords us the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting topics – Cyber Security, Cloud Computing, Mobile Development, UI/UX, Frontend Web Dev, Backend Web Dev, APIs, Machine Learning, etc.

Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Illinois Computer Science or Engineering major is preferred but not required.
• Solid technical / programming background required to aid the matching process of intern to project and vice versa

Cast 21 Internship Opportunity

Cast21 is a rapidly-growing medical device startup that was founded by UIUC students and has since gained international exposure. We are excited to work with UIUC students to continue to lay the foundations for our ever-growing company.

The internship will be part-time (10-12 hrs/week) with flexible hours and an ideal start of late January.

Work will be focused on writing code for a prototyping machine to build Cast21's innovative waterproof casts (www.cast21.com).
