Engineering Ambassadors Annual Speaking Competition

Every spring, Engineering Ambassadors hosts a STEM Speaking Competition for students within the Grainger College of Engineering. The purpose of this competition is to recognize engineering students who are excellent technical communicators. By recognizing these students in a public competition, they hope to challenge the stereotype that engineers are poor communicators.

Students who choose to participate in the competition are asked to develop a short, 7-minute talk responding to a prompt selected by the EA program. This year, the prompt is “How can engineers balance ethics with innovation?”

The competition consists of two rounds: an application round and a competition round. During the application round, students are required to complete an application that consists of a 250 word proposal for their talk and a 1-2 minute video discussing what their talk will be about. Applicants selected to move on to the competition round will be invited to attend a technical communication workshop presented by Engineering Ambassadors to help develop their talk. The final competition will take place Saturday, April 22nd from 1-3:30 pm. Winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place talks will be awarded $150, $100, and $50 prizes, respectively.

All STEM majors are invited to apply to participate in the Speaking Competition. The application is linked here, and is due by Wednesday, April 12th at 11:59 pm.
