About the Program

Drawing on the Northwestern Engineering whole-brain philosophy and leadership in cognitive science, the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence program aims to serve this demand by producing students who have exceptional technical skills and also understand the nature of the human environments in which the systems they build will be deployed. Their goal is to educate and train students in all aspects of how the emerging technologies of machine intelligence can be designed and deployed to interact and integrate with human partners. Machine learning, human-computer interaction, natural language processing, cognitive modeling – among other topic areas – will be explored to round out this dynamic, in demand degree.

SWE Scholarships

Upperclass Deadline to Apply: February 15, 2019

In 2018, the Society of Women Engineers awarded more than 230 new and renewed scholarships valued at more than $830,000. SWE Scholarships support those who identify as female pursuing associate, bachelor or graduate degrees in engineering, engineering technology and computer science both in the United States, and internationally.

 

Students complete one application and are considered for all scholarships for which they are eligible. The application process is entirely online including submission of recommendation letters and transcripts.

 

If you will be a sophomore through Ph.D. candidate in the 2019-2020 academic year, apply online for a SWE Scholarship December 1, 2018 through February 15, 2019. If you will be a freshman in the upcoming fall semester, you may apply March 1 through May 1, 2019. Learn more on our SWE Scholarships page.

Scientista Symposium

This year the 2019 Scientista Symposium: Science Without Borders is in Boston, MA!

The Scientista Foundation is a national 501c3 nonprofit organization committed to empowering and advancing young women in science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM) careers. Each year they host a three-day conference for young women (and those who support them!) to network with others in their fields, learn critical professional and technical skills, meet recruiters and representatives from top companies and academic programs, present their work, and compete for over $100,000 in scholarships.

This year’s program features 3 inspirational keynote speakers, career panels on topics such as science communication, science policy, industry, and entrepreneurship in STEM, a research poster session, a pitch competition to a panel of investors, and a career fair with 80 top organizations like Google, Genentech, NASA, and more. Their conferences regularly attract over 500 young women from top institutions throughout the country – it’s a fantastic opportunity to cultivate professional relationships.

About Facebook University

We believe that anyone, anywhere can make a positive impact by developing products to bring the world closer together. Facebook University (FBU) for Engineers is a paid eight-week training program designed to provide mobile development experience to students who are historically under-represented in computer science.

The eight-weeks is broken down by three-weeks of mobile development training in either iOS or Android, followed by five-weeks of hands-on project work on small teams of three. Throughout the duration of the program you’ll be paired with a Facebook Engineer who will serve as your mentor and guide you along the way.

Ernest and Young Design Sprint

Can you tell me more about this event?

Design thinking is a process and methodology to develop and test new ideas. Its usage has grown in popularity with developers, consultants, or anyone looking to tackle a complex challenge. At EY, we are using design thinking with our clients more frequently to come up with creative solutions, that help us win in the marketplace.

During the EY Design Sprint, you will have the opportunity to learn about the design thinking process with a hands-on training and simulation, to introduce you to concepts.

The next day, you will then take that knowledge and apply it to come up with a solution to a client scenario that simulates the work we do at EY. Both technology and business ideas will be necessary to create the best and most complete solution.

How do I register?

Visit the registration link and complete the form to register! You need to commit to both Friday and Saturday times in order to register.  At this time, registration is only open for Juniors and Seniors pursuing undergraduate degrees. Registration is limited to the first 50 students.

Note: Teams will be made up of a minimum of three and maximum of five students. Each team of 3 or 4 must have a minimum of one student from both Engineering (or Information Sciences) AND Business (with the final spot(s) from either school). For a team of 5, your team must have a minimum of two students from each school.  Teams will form on Friday night.

While each person will register individually, you can come to the event as an individual, with a friend (or two), or as a complete team.

2019 WE Local in St. Louis

2019 WE Local Collegiate Competition Now Open! 

 

The WE Local Collegiate Competition provides undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to present their research to a broad technical audience. WE Local entrants are required to submit an abstract online by October 26th.  For St. Louis and each WE Local conference, the top five finalists, from graduate and top five from undergraduate category, will then be asked to compete in an onsite visual poster presentation and lightning talk.  Each finalist will receive a complimentary registration to the WE Local where they will compete and a $250 travel stipend. Finalists will also receive recognition at the WE Achieve Awards Ceremony, which takes place on Saturday evening of the conference.  To learn more or submit an abstract visit welocal.swe.org.

PwC Case Competition

PwC is hosting their annual Challenge Case Competition this year at the University of Illinois, and would love for you to participate!

Challenge is an opportunity for all underclassmen students to experience real-world decision making and teaming early on in their academic careers, while also gaining exposure to business professionals and leaders in the marketplace. Through this experience, student participants will build relationships with their peers, along with PwC professionals across all staff levels. Participating in Challenge is the first opportunity for many students to learn more about future programs, internships, and full-time roles for which they may be eligible at PwC as they progress throughout their academic career. Student participants will:

  • Work in teams to solve real-world, relevant problems facing today’s business world

  • Receive real time feedback from business professionals

  • Improve overall professionalism, through honing their communication and presentation skills

  • Establish a network of relationships within the world’s leading professional services firm

  • Build their resume to differentiate themselves from their peers and position them for future job opportunities

Who can participate?

Teams must include 4 to 5 people and must be comprised of:  

  • Freshmen & sophomores (in a 4-year program) or freshmen, sophomores & juniors (in a 5-year program)

  • At least 2 members in, or who have applied to/are in the process of, applying to the business school.  (STEM major or minor is a bonus!)

Blossom Pilot Opportunity

OTCR has partnered with Blossom to help them carry out a pilot program which facilitates the transfer of energy.

Blossom is working with Ameren to make green energy available to everyone. Pilot participants will be assigned a certain amount of energy, credits, or a combination of both. Participants are then allowed to create smart contracts which trade energy for credits, or vice versa. The top two people with the highest value of energy and credits will win $250 each.
